BIO
Welcome to a creative space for plant and interior design. Here, we are cultivating a space that showcases beautiful and inspirational interior plant design as well as a space that gives information on taking care of plants and growing your best home garden.
My name is Jae and I have been designing spaces for many years now. It all started with my bedroom as a high school student, and translated into my first apartment without roommates, extended to home projects with family and friends and has continued to grow and evolve as I grow and evolve as a person who enjoys design. Making plants a huge part of interior design has become paramount for me. Plant life brings an energy to a space that is unmatched. It makes the choice to chose peace, to chose happiness and optimism that much easier.

DEALING WITH PESTS
There is no way to completely protect your plants from pest, which is why it so important to be diligent in looking them over to ensure early detection of any problems. The most common pests are mealybugs, spider mites, scales, aphids and ants. Now, many sources will tell you that ants are harmless and won't damage your plants. Which is true, however, ants are symbiotic insects, meaning they will procure the lives of other damaging pests to reap the benefits of having these harmful pests around. Get rid of them! Terro is an affordable option and works for me. Diatomaceous Earth is an organic option that will kill all insects with a hard outer shell. It's easy to apply, and if you purchase the food grade version, it is completely safe for pets. To treat for scales, mealy bugs, and spider mites I use Bonide products because they are safe for organic gardening and can be used up to the day of harvest.

FERTILIZE ME!
Fertilizing plants can be tricky. Especially if you own an array of species because they tend to require different compositions of N,P,K which are the macronutrients Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium found in fertilizer. I fertilize my plants once a month throughout the year because of my location (South FL). If you live in an area that has marked differences in seasons (zones 2-7, some areas in zone 8), then you should only fertilize your plants during the growing season. This is about mid-spring to the beginning of fall. Outside of fruits and vegetables, most plants are relatively light feeders, the heaviest among my collection being African violets and begonias which I feed a chemical 20-20-20 once a month. The rest of my plants get a watered down version of the same feed, the most watered down being for my succulents. Because cacti require such small amounts of nutrients per feeding, I purchased a 2-5-7 cactus fertilizer to avoid over fertilization and promote blooms! Who doesn't want to see their cacti flower? Some plants, like snake plants, react adversely to fertilizer and can develop severely burned leaves etc. Living in South FL, I limit fertilizing my snake plants to as little as 3-5 times a year. It is really important for you to know your plants' needs because what they need will depend on the environment they are growing in.

LOW-LIGHT HOUSEPLANTS
This may come as a shock, but there is no such thing as a "houseplant." The natural habitat for all plants are outdoors. Which means they all thrive with proper sunlight, water, and fresh air. Now, there are plants who can survive in low-light conditions. These are the shade plants like orchids, philodendrons, pothos, most hoyas, calatheas, alocasias, monsteras and much of the snake plant family. However, they still need sufficient light to grow. And if you want any of your plants to bloom, they need light. Ideally, sunlight is best, but do consider investing in grow lights whenever necessary. I have a grow light on my patio to ensure my plants are getting sufficient amounts of light. Don't worry, you don't need to have deep pockets to provide efficient grow lights. You can purchase energy efficient grow light bulbs and use whatever lamp available that will get the job done!
